Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, photographe américano-ougandais -et accessoirement acteur hollywoodien- nous propose avec Memories of love returned une réflexion très intime sur les pouvoirs du portrait photographique. Pouvoir de figer l’instant autant que de visualiser le temps qui passe, l’enfance, l’amour, la mort, la mémoire. L’absence. « Beware of Time », « méfiez-vous du Temps !», nous dit le réalisateur.
Le film se passe en Ouganda, dans la toute petite ville de Mbirizi, où Ntare découvre, tout à fait par hasard, en 2002, le studio photographique « Akwatempola » (« celui qui avance lentement, ira loin ») et son invraisemblable paysan-photographe, Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo (1939-2006).
A l’inverse des ambiances très urbaines de Malik Sibidé ou de Seydou Keïta à Bamako, ou bien de Jean Depara à Kinshasha, les dizaines de milliers d’images de Kibaate nous livrent son regard très personnel sur cinquante ans de société rurale dans la région de Masaka : la fin du colonialisme étriqué, le souffle de liberté à l’indépendance, les années Juke-box, l’arrivée du Sida, la dictature d’Idi Amin Dada, jusqu’à l’essor du conservatisme évangélique et des lois anti LGBT+.
A l’issue d’un travail de numérisation de négatifs de Kibaate qui va s’étaler sur vingt ans, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine décide d’offrir « leur image » à leurs protagonistes et à leurs descendants, via une exposition sur place à Mbirizi.
Le lien entre le souvenir de l’être aimé et son image est vieux comme le monde, de Dibutade dessinant le profil de son amoureux qui part à la guerre, aux portraits « en cheveux » du XIXème. Mais dans cette région d’Afrique où les membres d’une même famille se comptent par centaines (quand ils arrivent à se compter !), les clichés photographiques vont agir sur les habitants comme une Boîte de Pandore. Il y a de l’incantation, de l’intime, de la cruauté, dans l’émotion des visiteurs.
Le regard du réalisateur, lui-même à cheval sur deux continents, soit juge et partie, nous livre toute crue une mise à l’épreuve de la mémoire à l’échelle d’une communauté. Une expérience photographique en temps réel et in situ, en quelque sorte, qui nous oblige à déplacer géographiquement, mais aussi conceptuellement, notre définition de la photographie. Méfiez-vous du Temps ! Méfiez-vous de la Photographie !
